Proven Strategies for a Successful Executive Job Search

Executives: sometimes the perfect role drops right in your lap, with a recruiter reaching out and the hiring process taking just a few weeks. But sometimes you can't seem to get there - why?

As you move up in your career, there are fewer roles. The competition is more fierce, and you have less time to be actively searching. You’re also less willing to take something that isn’t a great fit. You want to be highly valued for your expertise.

What can you do to land that next perfect role?

✔️ Keep your network warm.

This is the #1 way to be recruited or find your next great role. Stay in touch with external partners you work with, colleagues and bosses from previous roles, and continue to grow your network - including by helping others.

✔️ Keep your résumé and LinkedIn profile updated.

Recruiters don't know what you're doing in your executive role unless the details are there are LinkedIn. Believe me, they are searching, and you need the keywords and details there to show your leadership.

✔️ Share the scope and scale of your roles.

Every recruiter doesn’t know every company’s size and what your role in it means. You have to tell them how many people you’re managing, where you sit in the company, what kinds of teams you partner with, and how much revenue you’re responsible for.

✔️ Stay in touch with recruiters.

Did a recruiter reach out to you about a role but it wasn't a fit? When you update your resume or LinkedIn profile, share it with them to see if there are any roles you'd be a fit for now.

✔️ Follow executive recruiting firms on LinkedIn.

They post roles almost daily.

✔️ When you apply for a role, follow up. Especially if you're interviewed.

I suggest giving recruiters/hiring managers a week and if you don't hear back, let them know you're still interested and why you're a great fit for the role.

While 92% of my clients move on or are promoted within 4 months, it can feel like a long time when you're ready for that next challenge.

Remember that it's quality over quantity with applications and outreach. Put the time into the roles you're truly excited about and then follow up. This is the easiest way to move on quickly.
