Common 'Don'ts' and Quick Fixes for Job Seekers

I'm a sucker. I offered these resume reviews as a way to provide an editing service for less $$$ and I'm definitely re-writing resumes instead of just editing. If you want to take advantage of my perfectionism, use the link in the comments below😆 Sharing some major "don'ts" that I'm seeing:

1. Don't use tables. They're hard to format and a beast to work with. While a human is reading your resume, they also are hard for ATS to parse out. Use the 'horizontal line' in Word to separate sections.

2. Don't use a header. Again, while a human will read your resume, you want to be 'ATS-readable' so drop that header in the top of the text. A 2nd page header is fine.

3. Show the FULL time you're been with an employer when you've had multiple roles. Don't make readers add up the time you held each role.

4. Don't use pronouns - 1st person is okay in the profile (I rarely use it, but sometimes it just works better) but stay away from using "our" or "their."

5. Don't put your education at the top unless you just graduated. Otherwise, your achievements should speak more highly of your abilities. (It's not the degree, it's what you do with it.)
