What You Don't Have to Do After a Layoff – A Career Strategist's Insights

Hate seeing the continued layoffs in tech and other areas. Love seeing great messages here and lots of support, which is exactly how LinkedIn should work. I talk with folks who have been laid off quite often, and I wanted to call out a few things you 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 have to do when you've been affected by a layoff.

🚫 You don't have to take your first severance offer. You can negotiate. This doesn't mean you'll be successful, but you can ask. Asking is the first step in so many things! #ask

🚫 You don't have to search for a lateral role. You can use a layoff to springboard to the next step, provided you've done the work. Many, many people have used a layoff to move to the C-Suite. You can too.

🚫 You don't have to focus on anyone but yourself. Maybe this sounds selfish, and it's great to see so many people helping others right now, but people with current jobs can help those who've been laid off. It's time for you right now - and if that means taking some time to relax, to rethink your career strategy, or to pivot, do what's best for YOU.
