Key Questions to Help you Negotiate your Next Job Offer
I love helping people negotiate everything under the sun. I can be in your corner, back you up, and help you play hardball. But the point is to get what you want. So one of the first things I ask people is, do you know what you want?
It's worth it to take some time when thinking about a new role, where you are in your career, and what kind of work/life balance you want before starting to negotiate, so that you know what your must-haves are and your nice-to-haves.
Here are a few questions to get you started:
1. What salary will make you feel truly valued for the work you'd be doing? What salary will give you energy and excitement for your work?
2. How much time off do you need to re-set every year? In shorter or larger chunks? Again, what PTO policy makes you feel valued?
3. What are your extras that are non-negotiable? Stock options? Bonus? Hiring Bonus? WFH for a certain number of days or 100% remote? Unlimited PTO? A 30% raise? Child-care reimbursement? Stellar healthcare?
4. From that list above (and others), what are your nice-to-haves? What can move further down in the priority list if you get your must-haves?
The bottom line is that you can ask for anything.
I often need to repeat this to clients - you can ask for anything.
You may get a 'no,' but you can ask. Knowing your hierarchy of needs and wants before you go in will make all the difference.
Some people want a huge step up in salary.
Some people want better work/life balance.
Some people want mentoring and opportunity to move up the ladder.
Figure out what it is for you, that will help you bring your A game, and go after that. It'll work out best for you and for your employer.
