Outplacement: A Win-Win Solution for Layoffs and Employee Well-being
Every person who gets laid off should receive help finding a new job from their company.
Many companies partner with a third party to provide résumé updates, job search strategy, and career coaching, in what's known as outplacement.
I don't understand why this can't become a more standard practice - and especially for early to mid-career professionals.
Supporting people as they leave - through no fault of their own - is just the right thing to do.
And it's a win/win for the company and the employee.
Here's what I've learned by helping companies with outplacement.
- Employees affected by layoffs are less likely to leave bad reviews online, complain publicly on LinkedIn etc., and are more likely to move forward instead of looking back, when they have support to update their résumé and LinkedIn profile, and start their search.
- HR staff have fewer headaches when they 'farm out' laid off employees to résumé writers and career coaches who can listen to them, validate their feelings, and help them get their ducks in a row.
- Employees who receive help with their career documents and search strategy are more likely to move on faster, a boon to the economy.
- Nothing shores up the morale of remaining employees like helping the ones affected by layoffs.
If your company is going through layoffs - even if you're not affected and particularly if you're an executive - look into providing job search strategy services for the impacted employees. It really is just the right thing to do.
